probably better:

     require Apache::TestClient;
     my $r = Apache::TestClient::GET(@_);
     Carp::confess("oops") unless defined $r;

or restore the original:

     require Apache::TestClient;
     my $r = (\&{$name})->(@_);
     Carp::confess("oops") unless defined $r;
