Open OpenOffice.org (not Writer, the full soffice application) and on the start
screen that shows the different applications, check the pull-down next to the
"Open..." item.
With luck, your copies were going to a different place than the original.
Check the recent documents that are shown in that list and see if one of them
opens with all the work you had done.
