I thought there was a dependency on the Mozilla address book with regard =
to digital signature certificates as well. =20

Do you happen to know if that is an actual dependency and whether =
carddav can handle it (private keys especially)?

I was looking at the IP_Clearance Wiki, and the known problem of
replacing Mozilla.

I have noticed that for many things Gecko is being replaced with
Apple's Webkit some further investigation shows that Apple
Released their Calendar and Contacts server under AL2:

And CardDAV is the protocol they use:

http://carddav.calconnect.org/

A lot of work, but may be worth the look.
