Subject [jira] [Commented] (OPENMEETINGS-571) Chat area does not resize when resizing browser window
Date Sun, 17 Mar 2013 12:17:14 GMT

Marius van Voorden commented on OPENMEETINGS-571:

So, there’s two parts to this.
Vertical resizing is relatively cheap: All the chat messages simply need to move up or down
as one large block. This might even be cheap enough to do while the user is dragging the window.
Horizontal resizing is expensive, because the text and emoticons need to reflow. Part of this
can be processed in parallel: All the individual chat messages can reflow their own content
individually, given a certain width. After that is done, the message containers themselves
need to be repositioned, based on their new vertical size. This can be done either sequentially,
starting with the latest message and working upwards, or it can be done in parallel, if a
list of message container heights is generated first.

Note that if we manage to implement this, we get the free bonus that we can make the chat
area itself resizable. My users use video without audio, so the chat is the main communication.
The limited chat area size is an issue (which I’ve worked around by increasing the baseTabChatPanel

It may be of use to look at other applications which manage to do this. To take an example,
skype reflows its text on the fly without any problems. Why is that? Is it because it uses
OS-native UI? Does it use GPU acceleration? Is this specifically an issue because we’re
using flash? If so, are there other flash applications that have solved this problem? Any
red5 specific applications, maybe?
