For the record, we had once tried to upgrade to surefire 2.3, but we  
reverted due to the issue described at:

   http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OPENJPA-186

If that is no longer occurring, then I think upgrading surefire to 2.4  
is a nice advance.
