trunk/pom.xml declares the following maven dependency on JUnit. 
        <dependency>
            <groupId>junit</groupId>
            <artifactId>junit</artifactId>
            <version>3.8.1</version>
            <scope>compile</scope>
        </dependency>

The dependency should be test, not compile, as required only by test components.
