The platform does in fact run on JDK 9. The IDE is built on top of that
after all, so if that doesn't work the IDE wouldn't run either.

So I just created a brand new platform application, using IDE 9.0 beta with
JDK 9.0.4. What didn't work out of the box was running it on the default
platform used by the IDE. But when I added the JDK 9 as a seperate Java
platform, and ran it using that, the platform app started up without any
issue.
