You should not have any seam stuff in your faces-config, it auto
registers itself. My faces-config.xml:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE faces-config PUBLIC
  "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD JavaServer Faces Config 1.1//EN"
  "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-facesconfig_1_1.dtd">

<faces-config xmlns="http://java.sun.com/JSF/Configuration" >
  <application>
    <default-render-kit-id>org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.core</default-render-kit-id>
  </application>
</faces-config>

Another thing to do is debug through Manager.java and
Conversation.java (or is it Conversations.java, I forget) and debug
the code that checks for a conversation.

Also logging really helped me:

Here is some of my log4j.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE log4j:configuration SYSTEM "log4j.dtd">

<log4j:configuration xmlns:log4j="http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/"
debug="false">

  <appender name="CONSOLE" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender">
    <param name="Target" value="System.out"/>

    <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout">
      <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d{HH:mm:ss,SSS} %-5p
[%c{1}] %m%n"/>
    </layout>
  </appender>

  <!--
  <category name="org.hibernate">
    <priority value="DEBUG"/>
  </category>
  -->

  <!--
  <category name="org.jboss.seam">
    <priority value="DEBUG"/>
  </category>
  -->

  <category name="org.jboss.seam.jsf.AbstractSeamPhaseListener">
    <priority value="FATAL"/>
  </category>

  <category name="org.apache.myfaces.trinidadinternal.application.NavigationHandlerImpl">
    <priority value="DEBUG"/>
  </category>

  <category name="org.apache.myfaces.application.NavigationHandlerImpl">
    <priority value="DEBUG"/>
  </category>

  <category name="org.jboss.seam.core.Pages">
    <priority value="TRACE"/>
  </category>

  <category name="org.jboss.seam.core.Manager">
    <priority value="TRACE" />
  </category>

  <root>
    <priority value="INFO"/>
    <appender-ref ref="CONSOLE"/>
  </root>

</log4j:configuration>
