It appears to me that the implementation makes assumption about the developers intended collection type (one comments starts like "this is a curious situation..."). Instead the collection type should be configurable. I have the rather exotic application in mind where I want to edit an in-clause of an SQL query ("in (1,2,4)"). This String property apparently is eqivalent to a list of values of some type.
