We do something similar. The following logout method works with both old and new myfaces.

public String logout()
{
  HttpServletRequest request = (HttpServletRequest)FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequest();
  HttpSession session = request.getSession();
  session.invalidate();
      
  return "success";
}
