Subject Re: No compiler is provided in this environment. Perhaps you are running on a JRE rather than a JDK?

Thanks for the input... I checked to see what happens when I set my
JAVA_HOME back to the default 1.6 and, indeed, I get the same as Wayne,
i.e. the JAVA_HOME value matches the 'Java home' reported by maven (which
is the java.home system property, I think). To be clear I've install JDK
1.7 using the Mac OS X download from Oracle, and my objective is to use
`mvn compile` with it...

*Is anyone successfully using maven to compile using JDK 1.7 on Mac OS X?*

I think I'll probably continue to eclipse to compile my project but I was
hoping to do something a little different.

This looks like a bug in the maven-compiler-plugin to me; I suspect that it
is attempting to find tools.jar under the java.home system property which
is the "installation directory for JRE" (
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/environment/sysprop.html),
*not* the JDK installation directory... they just happen to be the same in
most cases.
