As others have stated adding a repository with id archetype does not work, there doesn't seem
to be any way to enable this functionality with the current version.  

As a workaround I'm using the previous version of the plugin i.e.:
mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-archetype-plugin:2.4:generate -DarchetypeCatalog=http://myrepo/archetype-catalog.xml
