Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: MAVEN-196
    Summary: Dependency type handling - dependency type can diffrent than artifact file extension
       Type: Bug

     Status: Closed
   Priority: Major
 Resolution: FIXED

 Time Spent: Unknown
   Estimate: 0 minutes

    Project: maven
   Fix Fors:
             1.0-beta-10
   Versions:
             1.0-beta-8

   Assignee: Vincent Massol
   Reporter: Michal Maczka

    Created: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 11:36 AM
    Updated: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 5:05 PM

Description:
Currenly there is asuumption that artifact/dependecy type is alway the same as artifact file
extension.

This is not always true. As example of such dependecy

  <dependencies>
    <dependency>
      <id>myejb</id>
      <version>1.0.1</version>
      <type>ejb</type>
    </dependency>
  </dependencies>

Maven will try to lookup this artifact as

REPO/myejb/ejbs/myejb-1.0.1.ejb

while correct path is

REPO/myejb/ejbs/myejb-1.0.1.ejb

EJB artifact have file extension ".jar" (that is the correct approach, and that is how ejb
pluging names them.
