Hmm, I couldn't immediately reproduce this here.  Did the following:

(1) Built trunk ManifoldCF
(2) Downloaded tomcat 7.0.53
(3) Unpacked tomcat, set the tomcat-users.xml to include a user with permissions for manager-gui
(4) Added setenv.bat in bin directory, with 'set CATALINA_OPTS=-Dorg.apache.manifoldcf.configfile <full path of dist/example/properties.xml>'
(5) catalina.bat run
(6) Went to manager UI, and deployed war dist/web/war/mcf-combined-service.war
(7) Went to url localhost:8080/mcf-combined-service, logged in, created SharePoint connection (both a working one and a failing one)

No error, everything worked as expected...
