You don't want to decay the training values, only the query values. The training values indicate
user taste similarity and that decays very slowly if at all. The truncation I was talking
about is in the query vectors. And even with that I'd measure its effect. 

If you do this with [B'B]H_p you'll likely get the strongest recs, [B'B] will yeild the strongest
similar items. The cross-recommendations are weaker in my experience but still add value in
the blend especially if you don't have many actions/user.

Are you using similarity too or only user history recommendations? Similarity can be very
useful if you have a context item--so when the user is on a product page. Even when you have
no user specific history you can recommend similar items.

MAP tests precision for different numbers of results to it is well suited to measuring how
effective the ranking is. I measure MAP@ the expected number of items seen. You have a better
metric?

Furthermore, the basics of my implementation are done so far (a more "general purpose" reimplementation
of the item-based recommender) and I soon will move on to evaluate the approach with my dataset.
On the one hand I'm quite lucky since each of the interactions has a timestamp, on the other
hand the majority of users only has 5-30 views. My implementation supports a decay (using
a factor like 1/(1+e^$TIME_PASSED) ) of the view count, which smoothes truncation a bit. 

Nevertheless, I am still not sure if precision is the metric to use for evaluation. Since
most user's will only get presented or look at the first view recommendations, the position
or rank of the recommended items might be more important. (see page 6 of http://www2.research.att.com/~yifanhu/PUB/cf.pdf).
 At least to optimise the weights of the linear combination of initial recommendation, using
the rank intuitively seems more suitable to me. 

Of course, optimising weights might become a bit tricky and will require some sort of grid
search for good parameters (which might be sped up by using an evolutionary algorithm picking
the best intermediate solutions).

Since, most of what I wrote above about evaluation is still in the planning stage, any suggestions
are welcome!
