The example states that you should check out the source code as follows from
the console (if running on UNIX):

svn checkout *http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/mahout/trunk*lucene/mahout/trunk

What you really need is the URL *
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/mahout/trunk.*

The *lucene/mahout/trunk* part is not needed

So all you have to do is to enter just the URL *
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/mahout/trunk *in your client and you
should be fine.
