What you could do (and what we do) is to have a simple proxy in front of your Solr instances.
We for example run with Nginx in front of all of our Tomcats, and use Nginx's upstream capabilities
to do a simple loadbalancer for our SolrCloud cluster.

I'm sure other web servers have similar modules.

I've read a lil' bit about that, but my app is php-based so I'm afraid I
