If you check out the documentation for mergeFactor, you'll find that adjusting it downward
can lower the number of open files. Just remember that it is a speed tradeoff, and only lower
it as much as you need to to stop getting the "too many files" errors.

useCompoundFile set to true, should avoid the problem. You could also try to set maximum open
files higher, something like (I assume linux)

ulimit -n 8192
