Yes, it works for Lucene.  I've used this in both in Simpy.com and Technorati.com contexts.
You can see how this works by running something like `vmstat 2' for a bit, then openning an
IndexSearcher and doing searches, and them doing to `cat' trick while watching vmstat output.
