I'm not convinced that the wording of the new error message is all that great, but it's vastly
better then the previous behavior...

Committed revision 909746.


Note that this affected numerous different class: OrdFieldSource, All the "Sortable*Field"
classes, DateField, and StrField.  (anyone instantiating an instance of StringIndexDocValues)
