Shalin,
I worked with Matt on the original patch.  And you are correct we only ever
tested it as part of the StandardRequest never on its own, so changes would
have to be made as you mentioned for getting it to send out shardRequests.
 If there is anything I can do to be of assistance I would be glad to help
