Shard is what you call a small(er) index that is a part of a large(r) cluster of indices.
 These smaller shards together form one large logical index.

I wish Nutch used the same (shard) nomenclature instead of using "segments", so there is no
confusion with Lucene index segments.... but that's another issue.
