are needed because the Xcode compiler does not observe the -mno-fused-madd argument and will
stop with a hard error unless -Qunused-arguments is specified.

That unused argument is emitted by python and a sign that it was compiled a different compiler
than what you're using (probably gcc vs clang).
You should install the Apple command line tools (so you don't have xcode in the way) and be
prepared to build python from sources (easy enough).
