Retrieving stored data is always likely to take longer than not doing
so.  There are some tips in
http://wiki.apache.org/lucene-java/ImproveSearchingSpeed.

But taking over a minute to retrieve data for 50 hits sounds
excessive.  Are you sure about those figures?
