Signal 11 :)  Sounds familiar.  From what I remember, signal 11 tends
to be the sign of hardware problems.
Your code seems ok.  One thing I wouldn't do is to use a relative
directory in IndexSearcher constructor, without making sure it does
what you think it does (what does it do?  Does it use the directory
from which the class was invoked as the base?).

Since you are using a 1.4 release candidate, I would also just get the
latest one, which is only a few days old, and contains several
important fixes.
