Another possibility is to add all combinations in a single field.

addField("category", "/Science/");
addField("category", "/Science/Medicine");
addField("category", "/Science/Foo");
addField("category", "/Biology");

Your wildcard search should work, and you shouldn't have the problem with
a search "/Science/*".
