We have the Lucene index sitting out on a Linux server and wrote a little
daemon that listens for requests and sends back response objects.  We are a
large scale simulation outfit and it works great.  We also give the node the
ability to index locally.

I published a paper all about it that will be presented at SIW this year.

Be careful with option 1.  NFS and the Lucene file-based locking
mechanism don't get along extremely well.  (See the archives for details...)
