Managed to find a workaround to get things moving along on SOLR-13986, but this issue is still
(or even more?) important: I left some notes there documenting the ugly hacks/holes that had
to be implemented, so that HDFS support can work. It would be better if only HDFS users (rather
than all users) had these risks.
