This introduces a new dependency that did not exist in the past, and I don't think we should
do that.  There should be no need to get an open searcher to get schema information.  As the
failing tests show, it can have unintended consequences.  getSearcher() is also a blocking
operation and if called in the wrong context can lead to deadlock (certain callbacks are forbidden
to call getSearcher).
