One thing that we would lose in tests with the current approach is [~yonik@apache.org]'s SolrLogFormatter. We would probably want to re-implement it. I'd much prefer that to trying to straddle different logging impls for example and tests. I think devs should see the logging users will see. And did I mention the single line logging?
