I'm not trying to push for it, just curious what their use-cases are, they seem to be unused

They are not unused really, its a way for a codec to store special stuff that can then be
read later. One use case today is backwards compat, for example 3.x codec stores lots of crazy
stuff here that only it cares about, like shared doc store information :)
