If you decide that the current request-to-shard behavior is preferable to changing things, then I think that the query UI needs a highly visible notice that requests to that shard will actually go to the entire collection unless they make distrib=false, and there needs to be a checkbox for that parameter.

Either way, I think it's a good idea to make collections available as entities within the UI.
