There's not a lot of info here to help diagnose might be happening.  can you provide any more
details about your setup?

do you have any default params or non standard components declared in your "/select" handler
config? how does your solrconfig.xml differ from the 4.0-BETA config?

what kind of numFound do you see using any of the other response writers?

what numFound do you get when querying the individual shards with various response writers?

wild guess: did you load all of your data before executing any queries?  is it possible that
your web browser cached the response of one of those requests while some data was still being
loaded? (ie: what does the <httpCaching> section of your solrconfig.xml look like?)
