Han Jiang updated LUCENE-3892:
------------------------------

    Attachment: LUCENE-3892-pfor-compress-slow-estimate.patch
                LUCENE-3892-pfor-compress-iterate-numbits.patch

Maybe we should cleanup those patches first? The latest LUCENE-3892-for&pfor-with-javadoc.patch
should be a baseline for current methods.

The patch marked as "iterate numbits" uses previous method to estimate compressed size, ignoring
all forced exception, while the other one marked as "slow estimate" will fakely compress the
whole block several times, and get the lower bound of our compressed size. Here is a comparison:

{noformat}
method         header_cut iter_numBits slow_estimate
index size(M)  577        573          554
index time(s)  275        258          296
{noformat}

> On the flex branch we explored a number of possible intblock
> encodings, but for whatever reason never brought them to completion.
> There are still a number of issues opened with patches in different
> states.
> Initial results (based on prototype) were excellent (see
> http://blog.mikemccandless.com/2010/08/lucene-performance-with-pfordelta-codec.html
> ).
> I think this would make a good GSoC project.
