I've found it to be robust so far - you just need to be clear about directing criteria at
only one child or potentially different children. 
The main challenge in using this functionality is allowing users to articulate the nuances
of such queries and Lucene-3133 is a holding place for this.

Under the covers using the same cached filter for parent filters certainly helps with performance
and I typically wrap the ParentFilter tag in the XML queries with a <CachedFilter> tag
to achieve this
