RangeQuery when no upperbound is set does'nt find anything

let's say I have a field named examplefield, and two documents, one with "a" in the field
examplefield, 
and the other one with "j".
If I search for examplefield:[a to z] the two documents are found
If I search for examplefield:["" TO c] the first document is found
If I search for examplefield:[a TO ""] NO DOCUMENTS are found, where I think the two documents

should be found
