Are you using an IBM jvm? If so this sounds like a duplicate of #27408
(http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=27408) however that bug
relates to IBM's 1.3.1 JVM. For work-arounds, see also
http://www.mail-archive.com/lucene-dev@jakarta.apache.org/msg04917.html

A few days ago I opened a PRM with IBM's Java Support, and today they added this
note:
"Problem recreated with the testcase on the latest 1.3.1 builds and
1.4.1 builds".

The test case I included was a runnable jar containing the latest lucene 1.4
code from cvs (with FieldSortedHitQueue's java 1.4 stuff removed) plus this
class: http://www.mail-archive.com/lucene-dev@jakarta.apache.org/msg04387.html
