Lexical error using wildcard "*" prefix

Whenever trying to query index using the string "*anysuffix" produces the 
follwoing error.

org.apache.lucene.queryParser.ParseException: Lexical error at line 1, column 1. 
 Encountered: "*" (42), after : ""

the line that causes the error is:
logger.log("parsing query string:" + indexQueryData.getQueryString());
Query query = 
QueryParser.parse(indexQueryData.getQueryString(),DocumentGeneratorConstants.FIE
LD_CONTENTS, analyzer);
