Gmail does not accept unencrypted connections on port 25 (common now  
for public mail servers, but not the case when log4j was first written).

Support for SMTP over SSL (port 443 if I remember correctly) was added  
to the log4j code base last fall, https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=25355

, but hasn't made it into a formal release yet.  With a build off the  
current trunk, you can specify smtpProtocol="SMTP+SSL" which has been  
tested with gmail.
