Thanks for the response. I guess I'll have to wait for 1.3 then. The following page on the
wiki:
http://wiki.apache.org/logging-log4j/DailyRollingFileAppender

indicates that somebody has extended DailyRolloingFileAppender to include this feature, but
I'm not sure if this has been included in an official release?

In 1.2 no, but I think that is supported in 1.3.  In 1.2 you could set
up a cron job to delete the extra files.
