I found cause for the original problem in this thread.
It was a corrupt  .m2/repository/org/apache/karaf/features/standard/4.2.0  in my local Maven
repository.
After deleting this directory everything worked as expected.

I am using the Karaf project "assemblies/apache-karaf” as an example.  Thanks JB for the
