Agreed the current approach isn't the most intuitive. This would need a KIP though, as we're
pretty stingy about adding public API since it requires more maintenance, limits source code
compatibility, and gives us less flexibility in any future changes. That said, maybe these
are simple enough to be worth it. If you're interested in progressing this forward, see [https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/KAFKA/Kafka+Improvement+Proposals] for
how to proceed; it's all pretty straightforward for something like this.
