Create a dummy test plan with suitable visualisers in it.
Read in the output file using the file box on the visualiser.
[One could save the test plan with the result file name in it, but when I
last tried, one still had to prod the visualiser into reading it by using
the file box.]
Alternatively, write the output in CSV, and import into your favourite
spreadsheet.
The latest versions of JMeter (1.9.2+ I think) can read CSV results as well
as XML, so you might as well save output in CSV.

P.S. The Menu Open command is for test plans

I would, except I can't figure out how to import the resulting xml file
in jmeter! All the Open menu commands give me an "error in TesPlan"
message.
