It's a but clunky, but if you go "File|New" to create a new test plan,
then open the plan that you want to use you should get the desired
results.

This is what I want to do:

  Having a test plan loaded into JMeter (in  GUI mode) I would like
  to discard this test plan and load in a new test plan. If I open
  an additional test plan, its contents get added to the currently
  loaded plan. Is this doable without having to restart the whole
  program (which is too time consuming) ?
