The error message is clear but it doesn't line up with the docs I was
referencing here:
http://jmeter.apache.org/usermanual/component_reference.html#JSON_Extractor

If I'm reading the docs correctly, the default values should not be required
according to the Required column (though I see the Description column says it
is.)

That said, that looks more like a small docs issue so I'll close this bug as
invalid.
