which is what i was angling at. it kinda looks like it to me:

  echo md5("password4me");
</php>

yields: 9a74675cc48f209ef0f90d9a2d6f6e7a


# grub-md5-crypt
Password: <<password4me>>

$1$Vj4aj/$egcJmUaHrK2LXhegU2W0W/

if someone has another data point (e.g. hashing "password4me" using the java md5 class) we
could have a more definitive answer.
