  Log:
  Fixes bug #3732, affecting 'begin' in some situations.  discard()
  incorrectly took into account 'begin' in all cases, when it should only
  do so after actually having abided by it.  I still don't particularly
  like that small part of the implementation, but I feel it might be
  instructive...
