           Summary: RE.subst() throws IndexOutOfBoundsException with back-
                    references
           Product: Regexp
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Macintosh
        OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.3
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
         Component: Other
        AssignedTo: regexp-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: george@vitaming.org

RE re = new RE("fo(o)");
        String foo = re.subst("foo", "$1", RE.REPLACE_BACKREFERENCES);

This code throws IndexOutOfBoundsException.

I have included a patch that fixes the issue and adds a test case to watch for this.
