Would you or anyone else who has encountered it be able to throw some
light on the following exception state that I am currently getting:

An ItemStateException is to be expected in the JCR API, whenever an item
was modified by another Session in the meantime. Your code should handle
that gracefully, eg. show the user an information about the conflict,
simply try again, etc.
