up to Jackrabbit 1.4 the default sort order of query results is
document order and the implementation is quite slow as you have seen.
You can change the default behaviour by setting a parameter for
SearchIndex in the workspace.xml:

<param name="respectDocumentOrder" value="false"/>

In Jackrabbit 1.5 we changed the default to 'false'.
